  • Charles Kenny: Is Africa a Failure? Really excellent short paper by Charles Kenny arguing that Africa’s successes in increasing maternal and child health overshadow shortcomings in economic development

Drupal Modules - Tue, 05/06/2007 - 2:45am

HTML Mail empowers Drupal with the ability to send emails in HTML. I know that this is widely frowned upon but we should not be inflexible to it.

Reasons to upgrade your code to GPL version 3 from GPLv2

All about Linux - Tue, 05/06/2007 - 2:38am
Richard M Stallman the person who gave us the GPL version 2 licence on which Linux kernel and scores of programs are based on has written a very informative piece citing the pertinent reasons that one should consider moving ones code from GPL version 2 to the GPL version 3 when it is finally released. Some of the points he makes in the article are as follows : There is no problem in having GPLv3

DebConf7 and the net log - Mon, 04/06/2007 - 9:06pm

DebConf kicks off in less than a week (at least for the organisers) and I still don't have broadband at home. I'm typing this whilst sitting in a furniture shop around the corner from my house, where there are some open wifi points within range, which is what I've had to do for the last three or four IRC meetings and at various points in the weekends.

Organising conferences is hard!

What is there to stare at?

Time Unknown - Mon, 04/06/2007 - 8:13pm
Couple of days ago, on my way to the train, I ran into a situation where lots of people were staring at an ambulance and and a man who had gotten hurt. By staring I mean staring for minutes, doing nothing else. What's there to stare at. Help if you can, call help if none yet has, and if you can do neither, get on with your life.

Sidux vs. Mint: Can You Live the Pure Open Source Life? - original work by srlinuxx - Mon, 04/06/2007 - 5:57pm

There are valid and compelling reasons why one might want to use only Open Source Software. Avoids any patent or IP legal issues, better security, and encourages innovation are just a few. Many, like myself, would like to be completely Open Source if it didn't mean losing too much functionality. Can your computer environment be entirely Open Source? What might we give up if we chose that path?

Ken Vickery drops some history on us

Ethan Zuckerman's musings on Africa, international development a - Mon, 04/06/2007 - 2:53pm

Historian Kenneth Vickery is a pinch-speaker today, filling in for George Ayittey. It’s awfully hard to fill Ayittey’s shoes, but Ayittey has been well represented by early speakers, and Vickery has a useful set of stories to tell - historical stories from the continent from the past millenium. He starts with his own story - a young graduate student, hitchhiking from Nairobi to Arusha, and collecting stories from the man kind enough to pick him up and the people he encountered on the trip.

A 3.3 billion year old toddler

Zeray Alemseged is an Ethiopian paleontologist who claims responsibility for an amazing discovery: the world’s oldest child skeleton. In northeastern Ethiopia, he’s discovered a skeleton of a three year old girl which is 3.3 million years old. The skeleton, called Selam, is a member of the species
