Adventures in parsing, part 4 - Tue, 05/06/2007 - 7:19am

I received a few comments on part 3 of this little mini-series and I just wanted to address them. While doing this I still want the main functions of the parser parseXxx to read like the maps file itself. That means I want to avoid “reversing order” like thenChar and thenSpace did in part2. I also don’t want to hide things, e.g. I don’t want to introduce a function that turns (a <* char ' ') <*> b into a <#> b.

Pioneering African financier Idris Mohammed offers some diagnoses for the ills of Africa’s capital markets. His thesis: Africa has suffered from “abyssmal political leadership” and the fact that there has been very little “real capital that demands corporate returns on investment.”

It’s morning in Arusha. The Sox and the A’s are still going at it in Oakland last night… which is to say, now… tied four-four. I’ll be watching the box score as the conference sessions start this morning.

GNU/Linux thin-clients

Free Software Magazine - Tue, 05/06/2007 - 6:30am

Well, I suppose I’ve had a (not quite so) brief hiatus from blogging, and it’s time to come back into the fold.

I’ve been looking for a good GNU/Linux thin-client for my employer, a school district in the US. We have scores of aging desktops (primarily Intel PII 350 MHz and PIII 800 MHz systems) and looking more into the mobile arena for most computing needs. We currently utilize Citrix’s MetaFrame Presentation Server for most client applications, so we could substitute the current Windows XP OS for GNU/Linux.

Drupal Modules - Tue, 05/06/2007 - 2:45am

HTML Mail empowers Drupal with the ability to send emails in HTML. I know that this is widely frowned upon but we should not be inflexible to it.

Reasons to upgrade your code to GPL version 3 from GPLv2

All about Linux - Tue, 05/06/2007 - 2:38am
Richard M Stallman the person who gave us the GPL version 2 licence on which Linux kernel and scores of programs are based on has written a very informative piece citing the pertinent reasons that one should consider moving ones code from GPL version 2 to the GPL version 3 when it is finally released. Some of the points he makes in the article are as follows : There is no problem in having GPLv3

DebConf7 and the net log - Mon, 04/06/2007 - 9:06pm

DebConf kicks off in less than a week (at least for the organisers) and I still don't have broadband at home. I'm typing this whilst sitting in a furniture shop around the corner from my house, where there are some open wifi points within range, which is what I've had to do for the last three or four IRC meetings and at various points in the weekends.

Organising conferences is hard!

What is there to stare at?

Time Unknown - Mon, 04/06/2007 - 8:13pm
Couple of days ago, on my way to the train, I ran into a situation where lots of people were staring at an ambulance and and a man who had gotten hurt. By staring I mean staring for minutes, doing nothing else. What's there to stare at. Help if you can, call help if none yet has, and if you can do neither, get on with your life.
