People wonder what we do at Acquia's Office of the CTO (OCTO). In order to provide some more transparency, I wanted to share how we plan to give back between today and the end of the year.

Since Drupal 8's API freeze was announced on July 1, there has been some confusion about what API freeze means, from core developers as well as module and theme developers starting Drupal 8 upgrades of their projects. This post clarifies the API completion process, and documents what different audiences can expect from Drupal 8's development cycle and when.

July 1st has arrived. As announced earlier, this marks the start of the Drupal 8 API freeze (formerly known as the "code freeze"). I'm very excited about how Drupal 8 is shaping up; it will be a much more powerful and easier to use Drupal. While there is a lot of work ahead of us, I feel good about moving forward with the next phase of the Drupal 8 development cycle.
A month ago we started the Drupal 8 alpha cycle to encourage module developers to test out Drupal 8 and to try upgrading their modules. Today, we published the second alpha release of Drupal 8: Drupal 8.x alpha 2!
I think it is exciting that after years of hard work by many, we have now begun to post alpha releases.
Everyone dreams of making money while asleep. The term "passive income" is often defined as income that is received on regular intervals without requiring a great deal of work to sustain it. Usually some effort has to be put in upfront, but the payoff from passive income can last for years. Passive income is particularly relevant when it comes time to retire.
Drupal Developer Days is a great tradition in Europe to provide space for developers and site builders to get together in the summer. After such prior locations as Barcelona and Brussels, the Drupal Developer Days is coming to Dublin this year!
It's been a while since I wrote about Acquia Cloud so I wanted to give you a quick update. Acquia Cloud has experienced incredible growth so far in 2013.
In Drupal core, we use issue thresholds to manage technical debt. Both critical (release-blocking) and major (non-release-blocking, high-impact issues) are considered. When we have more open issues than our thresholds, we do not commit new features.
Post-Drupal 8's feature freeze, we find ourselves in a similar state as we did after Drupal 7's feature freeze:
Some initiatives are mostly done, and now onto clean-ups.
Others are mostly architecturally there, but still have some pretty big gaps.
Still others are either not yet architecturally complete, have a major amount of integration/conversion work left, and/or have many outstanding critical/major bugs.
I'm pleased to share that Alex Pott (alexpott on drupal.org) has accepted my invitation to become another Drupal 8 co-maintainer, to help move along important issues as we gear up to head into code freeze and then release.
