The packages appear in Maemo Packages interface, are promoted, etc."

Front Page Proposed referendum to tidy up Community Council election process before change in scope

When the Hildon Foundation was formed the by-laws provided for a Hildon Foundation Council to replace the Maemo Community Council, as an interface with Nokia is no longer needed. The stated intention of the primary author of the by-laws, Craig Woodward, was that the Maemo Community Council would transition directly into the Hildon Foundation Council and that these were not two separate councils, but a change primarily in name.

At Mobile World Congress this week, Jolla have been out and about touting their platform, and new SDK release: "The Sailfish OS is a mobile-optimized operating system that has the flexibility, ubiquity and stability of the Linux core with a cutting edge user experience built with the renowned Qt platform."

The Sailfish homepage says OS X and Windows users should "stay tuned."

Front Page Ubuntu Phone developer preview available 21st February

Good news for the open source mobile device platform world, Canonical will be releasing the first developer preview of their Ubuntu Phone platform on February 21st: "The software, intended both for developers and adventurous end-users, will be made available as images for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus handset as well as LG's Nexus 4. Source code will also be released for those who would like to port the operating system to other phones."

The infrastructure migration is making progress, but a number of bumps in the road have delayed the completion: "Since my last update we seen further outages of FW [firewall], database (unconfirmed, indication been 503 on maemo.org), and FW again and again. It's been an unreliable time for maemo.org for the last week or so. However, the end may be in sight: Joerg Reisenweber has described the first step of the migration of the services from Nokia servers to interim virtual machines at Nemein as "90% complete": "1st step of migration accomplished 90%, major issue: repository (due to massive load from ~40,000 N900 trying to update)"

Front Page System operator for Maemo infrastructure needed

The migration of maemo.org from Nokia's stewardship to a community run and financed infrastructure is still underway. The new servers are up and running and most of the services are nearly ready in their new home. Short-term, one of the last major short-term blockers left is in the handover of DNS control from Nokia to the Hildon Foundation (on which there has been no visible movement unfortunately).

Last week, the Hildon Foundation sent an open letter to Jolla requesting cooperation and financial assistance with maemo.org: "We would welcome discussion about a relationship between our organizations… If anything, we would like to form a friendship. If Jolla would be willing to become a sponsor and aid us in promoting the open source software aspects of Jolla and Sailfish — or, possibly even foot the bill — we would offer valuable community support to Jolla.
